Walk On By

Motion, maintaining space and solitude among the throng. Surviving snow and the rent check. Wishing the Jets had not lost in the playoffs. Going to a train the street or a bar.

Amtrak Lights

Rare visit to Amtrak level, one floor up at Penn where most of my images are made. Here the Christmas lights glow in the background, the image taken the second week of January or so.

We had sixteen inches of snow last night. We are shoveled out but it is cold and I need to feel a warm breeze.

Red Start

Penn Station uptown E platform. AKA, Madison Square garden and the 34th Street Station. A block away is Macy's department store, made famous in "Miracle on 34th Street."

Snowing hard again tonight - we expect possibly a foot of snow.

Rangers Game

New York Rangers fan waiting for hockey game last night at nearby Madison Square Garden and two commuters, iced.

Wind Chill Factory

Monday morning at Penn - it was around five degrees Fahrenheit outside.

Arriving Home

On the Babylon train from Penn - a rarer BB shot on the LIRR where I have become more timid of photographing my "neighbors."

The place I feel most at ease is inside Penn with the rush and bustle and all the distractions of a hub of transportation. Subway platforms have greater anonymity that subway cars or commuter trains.

Descending To Track 21

Sometimes you are late and arrive just in time to make the train but not to get a seat. On Express trains that may mean standing all the way home since yours will be the second stop - forty five minutes later.

The little things matter. That's why I commute with my BB and my iPod.

Rotunda

The large sign identifies train destinations, departure times and track numbers. Be there or be square.

This One Is Good

Captures the concentration and bustle of of this morning's a florescent 200 meter dash.

Blue

Went yesterday to MoMA and was very inspired by new Abstract Expressionist exhibit....ohh, winter here - more snow tonight.

Let there be light

Penn travelers still and in motion. The BB automatically "color corrects" ambient light so differently, sometimes seconds apart. Luck fortune and misfortune intertwined like good and bad penny stocks.

Blasts From the Past

Penn Light, a few batteries ago. What about images made on the Penn Station e train platform- are they best left to my subway listing or should they be included here? This one below today is posted in both.

Red, White and Moving

Across from the shop where they cell two eggs on a roll for a dollar in the morning. The bacon and ham they sell there is blanched and poor quality. People nonetheless line up. Like Bill Clinton memorialized, "It's the economy, stupid."

There is quite a difference between the shops at Penn Station and those at the more grander Grand Central. Grand central gets much of its ridership from wealthy Winchester and there are high end restaurants and boutiques there.

The original Penn Station was, a marvel of architecture, was destroyed to put in Madison Square Garden - we now live underground in a shell of the former splendor.

People pass though but it is harder to love Penn. After the wrecking balls glory and ghosts here are well hidden here.

Near the elevator to Track 21, hustle before the snow again.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Tuesday night commute, many people leaving early due to threat of heavy snow. Crowded and I explored it.

Monday, January 10, 2011

Near the e train staircase - subdued light and commuters heading towards the subway of the LIRR main concourse.

Have a Cold One

Near the staircase going up to Amtrak - many ice cold beers are sold in the lit up shops in the background during the evening commute. This is morning and commuters are heading west towards Eight Avenue exit or the A, C or E subway lines.

I keep forgetting to add titles.

Juice Bar

A new juice bar, still trying to draw in commuters with the allure of balloons....

Track 21

Exiting the 8:09 at Penn on Track 21. To the right is an escalator. Thirty degrees and mild wind outside.

Sunday, January 2, 2011

Penn Station, serving 600,000 passengers a day at a rate of up to a thousand every 90 seconds, is the busiest passenger transportation facility in the United States and by far the busiest train station in North America.
