Past the twelve days of Christmas, a warm winter has brought me one purple January crocus in the front yard. An early sign welcoming the distant sight of summer dresses and flips flops...despite the wave of Uggs and scarves and gloves at Penn.

There's pattern to my shot taking with this new BB. "Head on" and "pan" shots are hard to take due to speed of shooting and slower "film" speed (timing, movement). So I take more follow the subject shots since I have more control with these.

This type of shooting provides situations for closer framed compositions.

I almost brake for the color red. The BB captures it alive.

At western end of Penn there is my E train. The other end has the 1, 2,3 subway lines and also an exit that puts you on 34th Street, kitty corner from Macy's.

All these shots are of commuters heading east, maybe one in a million into a miracle on 34th Street.

Switch Problems

Lighting ho the switches at Jamaica Station knocking out train service for most of Long Island. I got to Penn at 6:10 PM and finally got home 'round midnight. I had to be picked up at a train station on the North Shore about thirty minutes away. Spent two and a half hours on one Babylon bound train that went almost to Jamaica before returning to Penn.

No tokens sold there but we still call it that, a token booth...quick shot taken while waiting to refill a twenty dollar Metrocard, a shinny yellow magnetic strip card that has replaced those little tokens.

Now subway management they can raise the price of a ride and not have to make new tokens, etc.

nine eleven ten

I am sure that more than one person who walked on this platform ten years or so ago died that day.

I was on a train in that morning and for some reason I was in the lead car on the railroad train facing forward so I could see the path the train was following. About ten to nine when my train got to near Jamaica Station I saw a large plume of white smoke in the distance and I thought to myself there was a large fire somewhere in Queens.

When I got to Penn I got on a very empty E train and someone told me two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center. The first stop of the E train I was on had been the World Trade Center so I am sure my fifteen minutes before train had been under the flaming towers. I assumed they were small planes and that it all had been an accident. It was not until I got into the office that I realized the acts of terrorism.

I never went to conference rooms where thee TVs showed people jumping out of buildings. I surfed the internet seeking news. I called home and spoke with Marie.

I do recall that by the next day I determined I no longer was a photographer since I did not rush out, buy a camera and document one of the most historic days of my life.

Five or six hours later I heard that they reinstated the subways and I took a very crowded E train towards Jamaica where I later boarded a crowed LIRR train home. Half the passengers were covered in white dust. Most of us looked displaced.

One thing I respect about that day is that New Yorkers, civilians, walked out with order and did not stampede out of the burning towers. We helped and did not kill each other in a panic.

We are used to crowds and to stress. We find order.

When you get on an E train heading south today the conductor still says we are going to the World Trade Center. At first it felt odd to hear that destination, now it feels normal yet sad.

I remember that Pete Sampras lost the finals of the US Open that year a few days before the attack. That nine eleven was just a beautiful fall morning.

That Halloween we did not litter or lawn with skeletons. It seemed too real.

Every time I cross the George Washington Bridge I look south and notice the towers are not there.

We do put out skeletons again in October.

Been away in Miami, Florida and the Keys where Hurricane Irene which took a turn and missed south Florida and headed towards our unoccupied house on Long Island. We were spared - no damage and electricity not even lost.

A lot of my images point down now - many accidental; because when I take picture I like to look at it and this camera waits so I rotate the BB and point the screen towards me before the pic is snapped.

Where the click button is makes it hard to take a horizontal picture with any discretion.

The new BB is not like the old BB. The key is not to try to recreate the BB images but to explore and mine what this new camera offers. So far it offers haphazard timing and it is hard to pan with it. But it finds beauty in chaos and makes one believe in good fortune.

The top two pics were taken with my new BB. The bottom one was taken with a loaner BB that was newer than my original model and which had no flash. I only had that loaner for a few days.

I loved that no flash since it would never go off. My first BB was sett to no flash but would flash on occasion.

My new BB has a flash and sometimes it reverts to that mode and at that point it seems to not take pics.

I like what new BB is doing but I need to find this older model and get one too, maybe from eBay from someone who is crazy about having the latest gadget. The shutter reacts closer to when clicked.

I am no good with BB model names - it was a Curve or Bold or something.

What is interesting as I experiment is that shots from the back, sort of what I did when I first used the first BB, are the ones most successful now.

Still shots are more random - more experimentation since the older stye of panning does not work, yet.

The shutter is completely unpredictable - panning is like Russian Roulette with a very noisy trigger....love the file size and saturation, but I am fairly lost - to me it is about technique and only a bit of luck, rather than a lot of fortune.....

Easiest shots are following people since there is less of "decisive moment," sort of like my early BB work when I followed people since I lacked experience and was more afraid of being caught in the act....

I am not sure how many of you saw the US women beat Brazil today in the World Cup semifinals. Playing a man down the tied the game in extra time during the 30 minute overtime.

New BB

Old blackberry broke and I have used two different BBs over the past week - this one I had for two days and took a few pics.

BBs now make very loud click sound which I have been unable to disable. They also have a longer delay between when the button is clicked and the camera takes the picture.

Larger file sizes and better colors are a plus.
